What about the screen? Are they finally moving to 16:9 screens?

    I certainly hope not!

One step closer to the MacBook Air update.

I swear, this guy never seems happy about anything. I seem to recall him saying this for other product releases... $10 says he'll say it again once the MBA is released.

    Kernel
A privilege checking issue existed in the i386_set_ldt system call's handling of call gates. A local user may be able to execute arbitrary code with system privileges. This issue is addressed by disallowing creation of call gate entries via i386_set_ldt().

Generating a successful malware from that list of vulnerabilities has two requirements:

    1) A remote arbitrary code execution vulnerability has to be linked to a local privilege escalation vulnerability.

    2) Those vulnerabilities that can be linked together must both be exploitable. Not all vulnerabilities are exploitable.

The only local privilege escalation vulnerability in that update is shown above. To be linked to a remote vulnerability to create a successful malware requires the following:

    1) The call function must be used by a process that also has an remote vulnerability so that the vulns can be linked together to install a payload, such as rootkit. It is likely that not all processes will use that call function. Also, that call function is for 32-bit processes and most client side software in Mac OS X that may contain a remote exploit are 64-bit processes.

    2) The two vulnerabilities have to be reliably exploitable once linked together as well as being reliably exploitable independently so that they can actually be linked together. Again, not all vulnerabilities are exploitable.

Linking together remote and local exploits is more difficult in Mac OS X than Windows. This is because Windows has far more local privilege escalation exploits than Mac OS X. Another factor is that the different levels of Windows are less insulated from each other than the different levels of Mac OS X. A common method to achieve privilege escalation in Windows is by manipulating registry values.

http://www.exploit-db.com/bypassing-uac-with-user-privilege-under-windows-vista7-mirror/ -> outlines how to exploit win32k.sys vulnerabilities by manipulating registry values.

    http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvekey.cgi?keyword=win32k -> list of win32k.sys vulnerabilities.

What I want to know is whether the 27" will play nice with 1080p input from an HDMI adaptor. BD player/PS3 hooked up to a 27" iMac without need for an expensive upscaler would be nice.

Still lovin' my 2009 iMac.... best machine I've ever owned.

So do I ... got the 27" i5 in and am just LOVING it. Couldn't justify the i7 as few apps support hyperthreading, wonder if this is still true.

Use my beautiful machine mostly for photo editing. See no reason to update to any new iMac this time round. Found it's worth to upgrade computers every three years as the science progresses, and look already forward to upgrading end of 2012, when technology will really have changed enough since 2009 to make it all worth the new experience.

    Love you Apple!

I'd say a refresh of the Mac Mini and/or iMac might happen. Why would they call both of the existing models 'early 2006' (esp. the mini) in this page.

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315

Because that's when they were released.

can someone tell me how to do that quick scroll thingee? i get it sorta randomly.

I just tried it, it seems to trigger when I make 2 or 3 revolutions on the scroll week. I'm already liking it a lot, a very welcomed new feature :)

So with all this dumping going on, Apple better have at least equal hardware. They were first out with the core 2 duo xeon and with yonah.

I don't know about woodcrest...but they were definitely not the first with yonah.

They've rested on laurels for a long time now.

PC sales slump will likely bring Windows down too (http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-20058038-75.html)
    April 28, 2011 4:00 AM PDT
    by Jay Greene, CNET

"...Windows will no longer generate the sort of buzz that keeps investors excited. And the recent decline in PC sales is ominous. ..."

This article points out that Microsoft has a hard time with large numbers of pirated copies of Windows being used out there. It made me think that there are probably people knowingly running prated copies of Windows, who visit sites like macrumors to try and champion their beloved Windows. LOL. I'm sure it happens.

I'm as pro gun rights as anyone, but this sounds like a problem for the security guard. Unless that guard's life was in danger, there was no reason to shoot anyone, especially in the head. The placement of that shot was no accident.

One upside: people will think twice before trying to smash into an Apple store.

First of all, you can't stop people from sharing information of any type. If not here, then somewhere else; twitter with geotagging, perhaps. Second, as far as I know it's always been illegal to notify other drivers of a cop checking speeds. I would assume it's illegal to notify drivers of a DUI check point as well. If so, arrest the person posting the information, not the program.

I'm still not too sure what to make out of these "iPhone next tuesday" rumors, from one point of view the iPhone sounds very Apple and a very much a possiblity.

But there's the sceptic in me which points out the plain fact that the iPhone rumors have been going on for at least 10 months with very little plausable information from credible sources about the potential product.

Personally I am not gearing myself up for a dissappointment, but if Apple does release the iPhone and depending on the price and feature then I may look into buying it.

And the other big question to ask will it be available for people who don't live in the US

Yes, drunk driving is bad. But so are other forms of distracted/dangerous driving such as talking on a cell phone, eating, texting, speeding. Shouldn't they rot in a cell too, since they are posing a dangerous risk on our roads as well?

You're telling me drunk driving is on the same level as eating or talking on a cell phone? Yes, they're stupid things that shouldn't be done and people should be punished for, but in no way are they the same.

Why single out one type of bad, high-risk driver?

Go read the forum title again.

I'm hoping for iMacs because I could care less about downloading Movies. Hell the only TV I download are the free eps. Unless you can get me 5.1 surround, DVD quality for a monthly fee that is less than Netflix... well, Netflix is still king to me. :)

Especially since DVDs ar easier to copy than these files would ever be. Not that i copy DVD's or anything.

    I predict the following:

iTunes Movie Store with... 1080 HD movie downloads.
    Updated Cinema Displays.
New Airport Extreme with 802.11n (for streaming the said Movies wirelessly)
iPod updates, either slightly modified nano(new cases+more compacity) and/or updated video iPods with higher compacity for said HD movies.

    ;)

I really do think theywill be available in 1080, and that will be a very big deal.

blueray? hd dvd? who cares i can just get them on itunes.

Well, an 8 meg connection is adequate to stream the HD trailers in 720p. I honestly don't think that Apple would bother offering the movies in any higher quality, as the codec scales nicely, and most HD sets are 720p or just that ED crap. When a set says 1080i on the side it usually means that it can decode a 1080i signal, not that it can display it. If you have a 1080i capable TV, you'll know it cause your ass will hurt much more than the guy who buys the 720p set.

If Apple wins this argument, obviously that would prevent MS from calling theirs the "App Store" - but can they still use the phrase descriptively? I.e. "Welcome to App Market, Microsoft's app store."

If they can't (and Microsoft, Google, Blackberry etc. all trademark the others, App Shop, App Market etc.), then how do you describe what the App Store/App Shop is? I can't think of a more generic variant which could be used to describe it. "Windows" is an OS. "Internet Explorer" is a browser. "Office" is an application suite. "App Store" is...errr... an app store.

Application store. Software store. If you want to use the word store. But there is no need to. App Market is clear enough, isn't it? A market is a friendly, open place where you buy a variety of things at good prices, not walled in and regulated like a store. I'd say "Welcome to App Market, the place where you find all the software you need".

Not naming names, but I find it funny how everyone suddenly becomes an engineer.

    Who said anything about suddenly?

I, with all of my first year Aeronautical Engineering Uni experience say a Mini Mac Pro is possible. :D

I think it would be really cool if it had support for a kentsfield or conroe if it's possible, as well as future support as well. It should also have four RAM slots. Two Hard Drive bays, and two PCI Extreme slots. All for under 2 grand Australian currency, so I can buy a 23" screen and a Macbook for about AU$5G, and I'll be one very happy, and very poor individual.

Four cores would be fantastic for working with Matlab for Uni.

Unless I'm missing it in the thread, I didn't see anything on this particular question. Does anyone know if this database on the iPhone is accessible by apps? ie. can you download some app that then scans the database and uploads your information elsewhere behind the scenes?

SSDs still need to get cheaper before I plunk down money on a MBA. The capacities need to increase too. Ah..maybe a few years from now.

Now is already a few years from then.

ok, so...I wrote this really really really long message, and by the time I had submited it, I had been logged out, and so I lost the whole message. So I'm going to re-write it, but in a much shorter version

Basically I listed all the Ideas I had for the Apple Smartphone. What made the message so long was that I also explained why I wanted each type of feature. I'm going to try and stay away from doing that this time and just list the features but keep in mind that I agree that a lot of these things are a stretch.

    - first, call it iMobile instead of iPhone
    HARDWARE
    - have a full size screen that is a touchscreen.
    - have the screen slide up to reveal the keyboard
    - have atleast 30 gigs of storage.
    - iSight that can rotate. For taking images and having the screen as a viewer, and having the iSight pointed at you for video conferencing
    - Use the EvDO technology that the sony treo700 uses that is supposed to be "near broadband speeds"

    SOFTWARE
    - iPod interface
    - mobile iTunes Store, able to download music, shows, and movies on the go.
    - ability to record sounds and voices
    - ability to record video
    - mobile versions of Mail, Address Book, Calender, iPhoto (displaying photos you take or upload) and able to sync perfectly
    - mobile Safari
    - mobile stickies (more like a notepad type feature)
    - bluetooth ( using headsets, but also using the phone as a remote for keynote and the soon to be released iTV
    - radio tuner ( i know this is pretty simple, but why not?)
    - GPS like system, or atleast a built in mobile google maps? (possibly even mobile google earth
-mobile iChat (since iChat can connect to aim and other services)
    - mobile widgets (my sidekick has a lot of programs that you can download for it, most of them being a lot more powerful than most widgets) imagine having the "find the cheapest gas station" widget, get our your phone, bring it up, put in the zip code of wherever you happen to be, see where the cheapest place to get gas is.
    - the ability to remote desktop into your mac. (would have to install software on your mac that would create connection for you) gives you the ability just to browse through you desktop's files, if you forgot a file that you need and lets you download it on to your phone.
    - Also, lets you use the phone as a bluetooth modem for your computer.

I'm sure there is more..but I'll stop there

Please! Let the Merom be overclockable in the next MBP or at least make it a CPU-swappable socket! If not, I may consider just getting a new Mac Pro that will be. Would hate to spend $3k on a new 17" with a stagnant (yet potent) CPU when every other Mac system out there will be overclockable or swappable. Any thoughts?

    B

Um. Most laptops are not overclockable or swappable. So you are asking a bit much there.

Also, Professionals don't overclock, children do. Buy accordingly.

Will an Apple Retail store upgrade your cpu? What's the cost to have this done without a warranty void?

    Also,
The Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 1066MHz will work in an imac intel? newegg sells them for $369

Core 2 Duo Extreme runs at 2.93GHz

    Think you'd need a new logic board for that.The current Intel iMac's have a 667MHz FSB.The E6600 has a 1066MHz FSB.Compatability problems there.
